IN THE STUDIO WITH KOKETIT

Tel Aviv — September 2022

By Ross Belfer

On a random Monday evening in Tel Aviv I was introduced to Shira Barzilay, otherwise known as Koketit, a thriving and innovative artist whose Picasso-inspired shapes and forms and uplifting “remixes” of photographs and portraiture have become a mass hit both online and off.

An Israeli who grew up in Maryland, the influx of influences and inspirations gathered abroad manifest a distinct aesthetic which the artist hones into and evolves in her sun-drenched studio in a verdant street in Tel Aviv.

After starting out with commercial commissions and digital projects, Barzilay is pivoting to create larger-scale paintings, drawings and works which are founded upon one singular motion of body and form and brought to life with vivid colors and pastels that bring a welcomed smile to your face.

Barzilay will soon announce a solo exhibition of her work in Tel Aviv, with details to be shared later this month.

In the meantime, enjoy a few captures taken during a visit to her studio last week.
